Lung Capacity Can Affect Your Overall Oxygen Health

Lung Capacity and Your Health

Most people think of your heart health when considering overall well-being. Believe it or not, your lung capacity, and the health of your breathing, are good indicators of your overall health. However, your lung volume is often overlooked and can be one of the most important factors when considering your overall health and longevity.

Heart Health

Many believe that your heart health is the best predictor of overall health. It is important to note that this is not the only factor in a good health picture. It’s essential that your lungs are functioning well and you can adequately process oxygen.

Lung Capacity Facts

You may not be aware that lung volume starts to diminish beyond 30. Typically, those aged 50 and older may be suffering from a lung capacity of 50% lower lung capacity. Your body has less of an ability to process oxygen in your bloodstream. If oxygen cannot get into your bloodstream, your cells are also not getting oxygen.

Typically, the signs of diminished lung volume include symptoms of shortness of breath and a decrease in stamina level when doing physical activities. If you see these signs and symptoms, you’re more at risk for respiratory illnesses that become more of a factor as you get older.

If you are getting older, don’t worry too much about your lung capacity because most of us only use about 10 to 20% of our breathing volume. Living at such a low percentage of lung capacity is problematic because it often leaves us short on energy due to a lack of oxygen processed by the bloodstream, which is not a good overall health picture and well-being. Typically, those with increased lung functionality and volume live a much healthier life.

Dr. Al Sears, who created the 12 Minute Fitness Revolution, believes that your overall lung capacity can indicate your lifespan. He believes that you’ll live longer if your lungs work better.

It is also essential to understand that a decreased lung volume negatively impacts your overall health. For example, you can impair your digestive functions due to lower oxygen levels in your system, which can also affect your metabolic rate. For those involved in physical activities, you’ll notice that your stamina decreases, and you feel more tired rather quickly. Remember that less oxygen in the bloodstream typically translates to less energy. You can become more fatigued, and overall health is lacking. It may be due to the decreased lung capacity affecting your overall health.
