How to Split Water into Hydrogen and Oxygen
On December 15th of this year, scientists from the University of Houston developed a “new technique.” They discovered that with the help of a catalyst, it is possible to “split water.” That means to separate hydrogen and oxygen from water by using the sun’s rays and cobalt oxide nanoparticles.
Sources have revealed this could be the beginning of the creation of a clean, renewable source of energy is possible.
Split Water into Energy
There is a summary of a scholarly paper titled, “Efficient solar water splitting using a nanocrystalline CoO photocatalyst.” In it, NIH.gov states that the efficiency rate for the new technique is many times better than previous methods.
Here we show that cobalt(II) oxide (CoO) nanoparticles can carry out overall water splitting with a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of around 5%.

Jiming Bao is the lead author and an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UH.
