Not All Liquid Oxygen Products Are Created Equal
There are several ways products in the class of “liquid oxygen,” “oxygen water,” or “Stabilized Liquid Oxygen” can be created. Some are nothing more than some concentration of hydrogen peroxide, which can have serious health risks. Other bottled oxygen products — what we like to call around here “the old technology” — use a chemical mixture, which is supposed to create a chemical reaction when it combines with stomach acid, producing oxygen within the body. Some of these old technology products have very high pH levels that will burn your skin if they come in direct contact! You can recognize this type of old technology product if the directions say it must be diluted in water before drinking. The diluting of the chemical helps to keep it from burning your skin and throat.
Dangers of Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide has the potential to cause injury or illness in several ways.
Ingestion of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide can cause:
- vomiting
- nausea
- irritation of your mouth, throat, and stomach
- gastric distension
- foaming at your mouth, from vomiting up oxygen bubbles that have formed in your stomach
- internal burns, although this is an uncommon symptom for this dilution
Ingestion of hydrogen peroxide at 10 to 20 percent strength can cause the same symptoms. Internal burns are more likely to occur at this strength.
Ingestion of solutions of more than 20 percent can cause the same symptoms, as well as rapid loss of consciousness and respiratory paralysis.
